When I was a "rather large gentleman" I used to strictly refer to it as "The Fat Guy Store" with all my friends and family. I took my kid brother with me shopping one day and when we got inside he exclaimed, " So this is 'The Fat Guy Store!' " so loud all my fellow tubbies turned their heads and shot him death glares as I hastily dragged him out of there.

I honestly think it would be a healthy shift in our relationship with the word "fat" to see it used more often in positive and neutral contexts. I'm all for body positivity and not being a piece of shit to someone just because they're big, but the extreme end of the positivity movement and their taboo around accurate medical terminology feels a lot like denial.

A lot of countries are like that. I'm from Canada which has similar sizing to the states. Went to Peru years back, bought some shirts at an outdoor vendor - couldn't try them on there. Got back to the hotel and realized a full inch of midrift was showing. Their larges are freaking tiny, length-wise.

Lol, there's an American woman I follow who moved to Japan and her Japanese medical records call her obese there because she weighs like 150lbs, but she's also 5'10". So she's as skinny or nearly as skinny as normal Japanese women, but their whole system just can't account for women who are not small because of how small Asian women typically are. I find it hilarious.

I’m relatively small so I would go nuts in clothings stores in Korea and Singapore when I’d travel there for work. In the US and Canada I’m a 00-4/XXS to S, because sizes are made up numbers. But over there I’m just normal and not in the little petite section off to the side.

My friend went to Korea and went clothing shopping. She walked into some store and all they carried were XS and S of everything. When she asked for a larger size the store said they don't make anything larger because they don't want fat people wearing their clothes.
Had a similar experience in Thailand. Went to a higher end retailer that only sold one size of men's pants.

I don't know how anyone could live in Mexico without getting fat. One of my oldest, and fondest, food memories is my dad leaving me on a street corner in Ensenada while he renewed a license in an official building. He left me several quarters, and told me to get some fish tacos from the lady with the cart. Quarter a pop, hot, delicious, fresh. My God, I'll never forget that woman. XD

It's more like, having learned English is a second language, they don't necessarily know the nuances and polite alternatives that go with the word "fat."
I can kind of relate. I studied a little Spanish in school. I know exactly one word for fat (Gordo) and I have no idea whether it's offensive, endearing, or something in between.
I lived in China for a while, and my students, who spoke excellent English, horrified my co-worker by repeatedly calling her fat. They had no idea they were being offensive.

Growing up in asia people are just more blunt when it comes to weight.
I think culturally it was just that way. You're fat, they'll tell you you're fat and need to lose weight (at the same time plying you with food--my aunts, grandmothers, and my mother *rolls eyes*). Its not the intent to be offensive, just facts and not knowing that weight comments are generally taboo in western culture.
Family parties may end up with comments of hey you lost weight, you look good but look how flat your boobs are.

Believe it or not that’s considered polite. It’s rude to boast about your own family, so people will say negative things about them when speaking to non family members. It’s considered being humble as your family is an extension of who you are so by humbling them you’re humbling yourself

Because they are not. In Chinese, 胖 (fat) is not considered an offensive word. It's even used in greetings between friends or older generation to the younger one: 你怎么又胖了？ (How did you get fatter again?) It's meant to convey that the person has been doing well. Even when it's used to describe a person who's actually fat, it's used as-a-mater-of-factly.

When I visited remote Philippine island, a sweet lady poked me 5'10, 150 lbs, and said fat like a cow. It was a compliment I was told. Only rich people could be fat. Also, long, strong nose was said quite often. I have a normal nose by US standards. Filipino people, by the way, are the sweetest people I've ever met!!

Not India, but I did a two-year stint in Peru as a Mormon missionary (visit us at /r/exmormon), and I was 6'8" and below 200 lbs (maybe even 180 lbs, I never weighed myself) because I got the same food ration as 4'10" Peruvian missionaries and I walked for hours on end every day. Even when I looked like an emaciated skeleton, people would casually just call me too fat. It kind of messed with me, to be honest, though being a missionary in general could be summarized the same way.
