writing prompt Humans always told us that simply standing would be enough to deter most animals on earth, and we had trouble understanding why until we learned about humanity’s predation method.
Persistance hunters…. Can you imagine how scary primal humans must have been ? Sure we all fear the Krokadil and know their giant maws would tear us in half but persistance hunting ?
Imagine being an innocent animal on ancient earth, chewing on grass without asking anyone anything and then you notice the two fixed eyes of a human, too high for any other predator, and you know what this means, you know deep in your blood, in your genes that this is the look of death, inevitable death, lions can be fought, crocodiles can be avoided, wolfs will eventually tire, but the bald ape will follow you until you die, it will never let you alone, observe you waiting for any weakness. The next few hours will be horrible…..
It’s been three hours now, it rains buckets, your feet sink into the mud and running is becoming more and more tiresome, your lungs burn, you have a hard time catching your breath…. How much time have you ran ? Your pack left you one hour ago so at least one hour. It’s the cruelty of the ape, the pack knows it may pick an other target like a juvenile so they left you, the ape won’t give you the comfort of death near your loved ones. The rain gets heavier, you must find shelter quick, but soon you notice the two fixed eyes, calm and towering over you, he is here, you must run again.
It’s been four hours now, you finally found shelter in a cave after running for two hours, but you can’t sleep yet, the ape is relentless, if you sleep he will kill you, but you are tired, so tired, you’ve ran more than your body can handle and the fear you have experienced is not exactly easy on you either. But sleeping would mean death.
You have been in the cave for two hours now and the fatigue is getting worse by the second but you wouldn’t be able to sleep even if you wanted to, he is here, this time you don’t see the eyes but you can feel you are observed, cold shivers are sent throughout all of your body each time a branch cracks or wind blows through the leafs for it may be him.
You can’t count the hours anymore but the sun is rising the birds sing and yet you are not reassured, well in some kind you are, he is standing there, in the entrance blocking the only escape way, you can’t see any details of the creature that stands in front of you for the sun is blinding you, the cave wasn’t such a good shelter after all. You would have fought for your treasured life if you had any strength left in you but this hellish night took it all from you and the thing seems to know it as it approaches you without any fear, your mother was right after all, those standing creatures really are the servants of death.
Do you now understand why standing on two feet is enough on earth ? That because the humans traumatised the animals so bad that it is written in their genes now.
