Serbian fans questioned by Australian police after they unveiled banned flags in support of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, including with a large picture of Putin’s face, chanted "Serbia-Russia", and threatened security guards during Australian Open. The Sky is Falling

I genuinely have a hard time understanding how 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation migrants like these guys can have such strong patriotism for another country - that they often haven't even been to.

Like I'm 3rd generation Dutch and lived in the Netherlands for a few years....but at most they are like the sports team I support if Australia are eliminated. I identify as Australian first and foremost.

69

u/RobWed Jan 26 '23

People struggling with identity but without the brains to see that culture is more than draping themselves in a flag.

Flags have nothing to do with culture. They're symbols of nationality. Culture is much more persistent than nationality.

I wish I could find the reference, but I remember reading of something called Fringe Empire Syndrome (EDIT: Borderlands Syndrome).. the premise was that those born on the outer edges of a powerful empire can lean towards the most radical, hardline support of that empire. Some examples were Stalin, leader of Russia but born in Georgia, Napoleon Bonaparte leader of France but born in Genoa, Napoleon III leader of France but raised in Austria, Hitler leader of Germany but born in Austria and Spain's Army of Africa who spent much of their lives in Algeria and went on to help Franco overthrow the Spanish Republican government.

The reason for their hardline stance typically boiled down to a separation from the social connections that typically keep propaganda under control. They believe the imagined idealised past that they are told in propaganda as an absolute truth. Ie. Germany was the most powerful military empire before the Jews took over, France lead the world in every aspect before Napoleon was overthrown, Americans had perfect lives in the 50s etc etc. Without being moored to real people and experiences that may limit their acceptance of propaganda, they instead build their entire cultural identity around the imagined past and form a cultic milieu of grand conspiracies that try to explain why the realities of the empire now don't match the stories they were told.

EDIT: Borderlands Syndrome, coined by Sir Isaiah Berlin. (Still can't find the original paper but found this quote from the NY Times)

Sir Isaiah Berlin once elaborated a kind of borderland theory of charismatic political genius. Citing Napoleon, Joseph Stalin, and Theodor Herzl as well as Hitler, he speculates that the peculiar psychology of many of the most charismatic, fanatic, possessed nationalist political leaders can be traced to their borderland origins: to the fact that they came "from outside the society that they led, or at any rate from its edges, the outer marches." The borderland syndrome, Berlin argues, has given rise to a disproportionate number of "men of fiery vision, whether noble or degraded, idealistic or perverted," men who developed "either exaggerated sentiment or contempt for the dominant majority, or else over-intense admiration or even worship of it ... which leads both to unusual insights, and--born of overwrought sensibilities--a neurotic distortion of the facts."

If they are that enamoured of their old country, they threaten violence for it or carry it out, they can go back to that country and live in it. We don’t want that kind here. We accepted their older generations because they wanted a better life with more opportunities for their families, so do others that live here. I believe Tennis Australia needs to do what the footy clubs now do to stop the parental aggression spilling into the field, stop play and the side whose ugly parent became the first problem, means that side loses their game. This should be brought into tennis and the players supporters. The team whose supporters turn ugly gets failed in their match .

You just have to hang out with your family and friends who all share the same background as you. Once you are indoctrinated it's difficult to escape

7

u/middle_earther Jan 26 '23

People don’t change ethnicity even after several generations and often identify more with their parents’ culture than the country they were born in for various reasons. I know a girl who was born and raised in Singapore but both of her parents are English and she identifies mainly as English.

7

u/mrarbitersir Jan 26 '23

Not always the case but it definitely happens.

My parents are Maltese. They were born there, married and moved to Australia. What was meant to be a 3 year move to make some money and move back has turned into 41 years in Australia.

We speak Maltese at home however they, myself and my siblings all say and truly believe we/they’re Australian first and foremost.

I’ve been to Malta once, hated it. Wouldn’t want to go back.

Australia is home. I’m an Aussie.

3

u/TheRealDarthMinogue Jan 26 '23

The siege of Belgrade was in 1456 and they're still going on about it so 4 generations might not be enough!

Generational idiocy. Their coward parents taught them their ways.

Speaking of, what kind of shitcunt runs away from a war then raises their own children to be a hardline nationalist?

You’re too cowardly to stand for it yourself so you indoctrinate your children to do it for you? What an embarrassment.

Serbian nationalists stand for nothing other than the right to commit war crimes against others, but only when it’s one sided and there’s no fear of retaliation. Cowards.

There’s a reason you only ever see them in a pack…

I (from UK) was at the AO for the De Minaur Djokovic match, expecting a big home crowd for the Aussie, and instead everyone was screaming for Djokovic with a sea of Serbian flags. Is this a normal thing? Are there loads of Serbians in Melbourne? In the UK you’d get a pint thrown at you for supporting someone playing a Brit

53

u/SEXPILUS Jan 26 '23

Didn’t help that the AO banned booing Novax. Most Melburnians hate him.

56

u/goosecheese Jan 26 '23

This is the part that riles me the most.

We ban booing Djokovic, and he got people barracking against him removed from the crowd, but the Serbs singing songs of Genocide and assaulting the general public get to stay?

Also, one of the main reasons I hate Djokovic is his support of these skinhead fuckwits.

4

u/MarshalBrozDinko Jan 27 '23

One of the main reasons I hate Djokovic is because he hangs out with genocidaires.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/9/21/djokovic-sparks-controversy-after-meeting-drina-wolves-commander

And not to mention the years of him hailing the 3 fingers on national television for all the world to see, and all the victims of genocide to hurt.

He's a četnik sympathizer.

It’s common in Melbourne for our large ethnic populations get behind foreign athletes and sport teams. Like when Italy plays Australia in the football World Cup the streets of Melbourne are full of Italian’s, most of which are 2nd or 3rd gen Aussies who would support Australia if we were playing anyone else

14

u/gccmelb Jan 26 '23

Serbs don't have many things to cheer themselves up with, so they latch onto Djokovic. Many come from around the country to watch him.

Quite a few of the Serbs at the match are Croatian born refugees after being defeated by Croatia, in Croatia's war for independence.

The funniest about Djokovic is he is half Croatian.

→ More replies

23

u/Fidelius90 Jan 26 '23

Oh wow, that’s sad. Most Aussies would want to tell Djokovic to F off after the shit he pulled last year so I reckon the local Serb community were just wanting to support their favourite anti vax hero. There were even people supporting him outside his hotel last year when he was quarantined before he was sent back.

2

u/MarshalBrozDinko Jan 27 '23

I can't help but generalise when I say this, Serbs are so BLINDLY patriotic (eg: the entire novak visa debacle)

Their unbridled nationalism (disguised as patriotism) is problematic and one of the reasons if not the MAIN reason the war started in the first place.

My family were expats in Serbia and were friends with an ambassador there whose husband was a Serbian.

He spoke about Serbia’s obsession for Russia yet for the past few decades they have strived for American things. They want their kids to have high levels of English, they consume American media, they want their kids in international schools, they want them attending Anglo universities, yet they sit there and glorify Russia as an idol.

I have mixed emotions about the Serbian culture after dating a Serbian born Australian. They’re such a proud group of people with a rich history and culture that will do anything for their community. But at the same time they walk around like they’re the best culture in the world and fetishise the motherland despite leaving it.

Sorry if I’ve upset any Serbians, I can call out the crap in other cultures including my own and your culture is great but the levels of patriotism and Russian fetish is shit.

161

u/decayexists Jan 26 '23

I was born in Serbia but came here when I was young and have since spent time back and forth between Europe and here, and I fully agree with you.

It’s quite frustrating seeing how blindly nationalistic Serbs can be and they let their hatred of the West and the things that NATO did to Serbia means they’re more than willing to support awful warmongers like Putin.

I’ve also noticed we have this perpetual victim complex while also being insanely proud of our culture and people and ignoring any negatives.

Not all Serbs are like this but it can be tiring to deal with.

40

u/Levijatan70 Jan 26 '23

I couldn't agree with you more. Just one note: what NATO did to Serbia is nothing else but world's answer to Serbian ignorance to everyone and everything especially not accepting responsibility for their involvment in Balkan war. While Serbia media keep telling in Serbia that was nation war whole worlds knows fact. That was agression by Serbia to Croatia, Bosnia. You are free to google destruction level of Serbia comparing with Croatia or Bosnia.

Yes, you are right...not all Serbs like that. I second that.

25

u/darkeststar071 Jan 26 '23

Lol, if serbia didn't do all the shit to Croatia and BH, NATO wouldn't need to do anything to serbia.

3

u/MarshalBrozDinko Jan 27 '23

I've found their lack of remorse offensive. Every Serb I've ever known has never quite understood the shocking horrors of what was committed by them during the Bosnian war. I'm sure I've met people who were involved in the war, but generally everyone I've known is too young to have been.

Another Serbian born Australian here who agrees with you. I moved here when I was young and thankfully my parents didn’t bring any of that nationalistic bullshit with them, it probably helped that my family is from all over the Balkans as well. Before we moved here my father had the pleasure of having almost all his Serb friends and coworkers turn on him because he was Bosnian, despite the fact that they’d known each other for over a decade. He experienced first hand how nationalism warps people, and was determined to leave that shit behind him. Some people brought it with them though, I have cousins who were born here and are super nationalistic. Anyway this display is incredibly fucking embarrassing and disgusting to see.

172

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

I've got both Hungarian and Serb background. Both of these communities are so full of eating their own shit they don't realise they've got their heads stuck in their ass.

Way too proud, can't take the slightest of criticism, ultra nationalistic, racist, homophobic, the lot. Avoid them all like the plague.

The food is way too good, though.

59

u/shiny_things71 Jan 26 '23

This is my background, along with Ukrainian. Love the food, but ffs I'm so glad I'm an Australian. They can take their jingoistic shit and shove it. My forebears who emigrated to Australia NEVER wanted to return to their home countries; as far as they were concerned Australia was the best thing that ever happened to them. My dad even asked to be buried with his favourite Australian flag, which he proudly flew in our yard for many years. He would have been furious at these dickheads and told them to fuck off back to Europe.

23

u/ranny_do Jan 26 '23

ahh the homophobia. I work with a serbian who constantly calls musicians fags. but i know another who is waving the rainbow flag

12

u/CaptainDetritus Jan 26 '23

Hah. Dad was Hungarian but not quite Hungarian enough for some of his fellow emigres. They were largely titled and entitled where they came from. He was poor, not from the heartland, and a bit of a lefty. Some lovely people sprinkled amongst them, but... I hate natiionalism.

15

u/TheRealStringerBell Jan 26 '23

But at the same time they walk around like they’re the best culture in the world and fetishise the motherland despite leaving it.

I almost feel like this is Australian culture for people to act this way. Like they are born and bred in Australia but will say they are Serbian/Greek/Italian/etc...

11

u/RobWed Jan 26 '23

I think that's fine. It's healthy to be proud of one's ancestry. It's unhealthy to think one culture is better than another. Being Australian means having ready access to a wide range of cultural influences.

2

u/TheRealStringerBell Jan 26 '23

You think it's fine for someone born and bred in Australia to identify as being from a country they have never even lived in?

1

u/azzartan Jan 26 '23

Yes

1

u/TheRealStringerBell Jan 26 '23

As an outsider it's extremely weird that's all. At what point do people stop identifying as being from another country here? 3rd/4th generation?

3

u/azzartan Jan 26 '23

I understand it being strange from an outside perspective, but living in Australia if you were asked 'Where are you from' or 'What nationality are you' it's natural to identify as the ethnicity of your ancestors, particularly if you don't appear as the typical anglo-Australian. I know if, as an Asian, I responded with 'Australia' to the above questions it'd probably illicit a laugh or a look of confusion. However, I would expect that most 3rd/4th generation immigrants would identify as Australian when in a foreign country.

Used to cover local league soccer for work. The amount of shit that people get up to at those leagues because “my dad’s dad came from here and your dad’s dad came from there” is next level. So many punch ons, shooting flares at each other, chanting the names of cities that were bombed during the war. It’s pretty toxic shit that 15-40 year old men at these games are obsessed with. Really pathetic stuff.

There’s nothing more Serbian than cheering for Serbia while not living anywhere near Serbia.

Coming from someone who is from the Balkans.

The Balkan states are the arsehole of Europe. They suckle off the teat of the EU while undermining all that brings them a chance of prosperity.

Petty bickering between almost identical people who have more in common than they are different.

The main objective of most of the people is to leave. But once they do they tend to forget what an absolute backwards shithole they came from.

I’m sure that’s the reason Djokovic lives in Monaco, because Serbia is just the best…

u/Rogue_Vaper Jan 26 '23

When people migrate here they tend to embrace "being Australian". This is especially true for migrants from conflict zones. Australia is a nation of peace & relative prosperity. Migrants from all backgrounds embraced it made this nation Australia & Australian.

Where things tend to fall apart is the Australian born 2nd & 3rd generation folks who want to embrace their heritage & are ripe targets for nationalist type groups to plant their seeds.

Every Balkan migrant I know who emigrated here post civil wars realise how lucky they are to live here & appreciate Australia in ways native born folks can't by luck of having been born here.

u/beldocavista Jan 26 '23

Strangely they still prefer to live in Australia

16

u/macfaddenstrews Jan 26 '23

If this was a peaceful protest by vegans or Nuns outside of Julie Bishop's office, the AFP would have hauled their collective arses out of there for interrogation and an invasive strip search.

32

u/twcau Jan 26 '23

At the very least, I hope these clowns end up on a terrorist watch list.

Would be nicer however if they were publicly identified, shamed, and shunned enough to realise that nobody wants to be around these ideological nazi-adjacent fuckwits.

Serbs are the dumbest lot I've met

Those who are on visitor Visas, cancel their Visa immediately as they were involved in Political Demonstrations, those on Permanent Residency should he required to show why their PR is not canceled, those who are Australian Citizens, put on ASIO watch list if not already on it in case war breaks out.

It’s 20 years these chodes have been doing their best to ruin the open for everyone else, while the neonazi sympathising VicPol do nothing except protect them from the glassings they deserve.

So many brain dead racists in these comments that think because their racism and disgusting vitriol is in the “right” direction they are justified in spouting their nonsense. Wearing “Z” shirts is cringe and despicable and they’re textbook idiots for doing this, but the vilification of an entire Serbian nation based off of this video is disturbing to see. Lots of racists and rednecks in these comments coming out of the woodwork and piggybacking on this video to spew their own bullshit.

4

u/Peregrine4 Jan 27 '23

Such as this lovely, heavily upvoted comment "Their parents fled a war and brought their shit with them. Well, their parents can pack their bags and take their shit back."

Imagine saying this and thinking that youre the good guy. Also imagine saying this about any other group of people

Deport them to Russia. Simple.

2

u/OpeningGolf Jan 26 '23 edited Jan 26 '23

Seriously, why are the police allowing this? Last week, a couple of guys had a Russian flag, and the tennis organisers said all flags had been banned.
Then we see a group of people holding like 7 Russian flags, and shouting pro Putin Genocidal rubbish, and nothing is done.
They should have stopped the match until these guys left, the whole crowd would have turned on them. Disgusting.

2

u/CarrotOdd80 Jan 27 '23

The Russians and Americans are the same. War-loving, power hungry, rich, who sacrifice the young to get more wealth and more power. They invade countries around the world constantly and no one battered an eye-lid until it erupted in Europe. What? Europe is more important than the Middle East, Asia, Africa? More white I guess… #fucktherich #fuckwar

2

u/mika_87 Jan 27 '23

Send them over there then

2

u/pedrosneakyman Jan 27 '23

Children of Serbian deserters who got out of 'their homeland' as soon as the going got tough against the Croats. Send them to Moscow and then straight to the front line to fight with their Orthodox brothers. I bet they run away as quickly as their fathers....

2

u/DrClawsChair >Insert Text Here< Jan 27 '23

Send em all to fuckin Russia then. Fuck off out of Australia traitors

1

What a bunch of brainless imbeciles. The Russian conflict has nothing to do with Serbia and why are they even bringing this up here in Australia? Possibly ban the Serbian flag to teach to teach these pelicans a lesson..FFS

1

-3

u/Device-Massive Jan 26 '23

So, Im looking at this video, and it seems to be one bloke holding the Russian flag and one or two adding "Russia" after the Serbs are chanting Serbia. What should the other people there have done? Caused a scufful or been aggressive towards the bloke that would've resulted in media coverage of Serbs "at it again."

Im Serbian, and I have lived in Australia for 35 years.. I am proud of my heritage, and I am by no means ignorant to the things people say and think about Serbs. But I also have to say that Australia is by no means innocent and has its fair share of atrocities that seem to be ignored.

The world hates Serbs for many things, in many ways, and as a person born in Serbia, simply because my name is not anglo, I cop crap. It's not all sunshine and roses by any means in Australia as a balkan born person.
