The absolute chaos at Southern Cross after the Chilli Peppers The Sky is Falling
47
u/Hounds2chickens Feb 08 '23
Darth was rocking out after the Chilli Peppers, was a great atmosphere and everyone was singing along. Music brings so many people together.

I'd like to point out that of all the celebs that appeared in that ep, only Bette Midler and (amazingly) all the Chili Peppers are alive. They even outlived Luke perry
Edit for list of the dead: Hugh Hefner, Liz Taylor, Barry White, johnny Carson and Luke perry

I live across the road from this pic. Just as I was going to bed last night, I thought I could hear the band playing. Turned out, it was this crowd singing Under the Bridge.

u/bmwiam Feb 07 '23
Due to Metro Tunnel works, there was only one line going from Southern Cross to Flinders Street and no trains that I saw going through the loop. This caused thousands of people to spill on to the stairs. I walked with hundreds to Flinders Street. Absolutely awful planning for a event with 40-50 thousand at it
74
u/WretchedMisteak Feb 07 '23
You should try being on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines. Has been mayhem for a good couple of months for all the works. Then they fucked it up and now we're running almost at a weekend schedule for peak services on Monday to Friday.
32
u/bmwiam Feb 07 '23
This is the line I’m on! I’ve been driving to work for a couple of weeks because of how shit it is. I miss sitting on the train, putting on some music and getting to zone out on the commute. The Monash is always awful
7
u/Fractalize1 Feb 07 '23
I was getting the line to work also. Absolutely horrendous. I was regularly late due to issues on the line such as trains not running and replacement buses taking an hour to pick us up. Over Jan there was no trains just replacement buses between Flinders and Westall. They’ve just finished it but trains aren’t running as frequently.
4
u/555TripleNickel Feb 07 '23
I swapped to the glen waverly line for pretty much all of January as I didn't want to deal with the issues on the pakenham line. Hasn't stopped there being more issues now I've swapped back.
10
u/WretchedMisteak Feb 07 '23
Yeah ok cool, my sympathies then. I've been working from home most of the time to stay away from the whole transportation shitheap.
-16
u/Aus_Pilot12 Feb 08 '23
How in earth can you sit on a train and think yes, this is better then being a clean, comfortable, controllable vehicle that I own
7
u/_PoorImpulseControl_ Feb 08 '23
I can't play on my Steam deck or read a book when I'm driving. That's why I like the train.
3
1
u/Sean_Stephens Feb 08 '23
1) It's cheaper, and 2) it's usually less frustrating than driving in peak hour
12
u/akoya17 Feb 08 '23
I've been slammed with FB ads for PTV over the past week - "Let's go to the concert!". My responses were, "Good luck getting home" and "Whoever's coming up with these tag lines needs to be fired".
34
u/reverendgrebo Feb 07 '23
its not far to walk to Flinders St, but the average age of the RHCP fans means gen-Xers got their 10,000 steps in on the night and woke up with sore knees
6
u/bmwiam Feb 07 '23
I’m not a gen xer, but as I walked around the city a bunch before and took around 20k steps for the day my legs are sore today haha
1
12
u/Ophiophagus-Hannah Feb 07 '23
I’d say there were easily over 60K in attendance. Getting home was C.H.A.O.S
8
u/bmwiam Feb 07 '23
What is generally a 30-40 minute trip home from Marvel after the footy took 2 hours
5
Feb 07 '23
I like RHCP, I thought to myself I know it’s week night but I could go.
looks up ticket prices
Yeah Spotify it is, dr Phil Lowe won’t be happy if I spend this.
3
u/Fractalize1 Feb 07 '23
RHCP charge ridiculous ticket prices. There is no way I could justify it. The profit must be huge when you consider how many people attend.
2
u/buzzfrets Feb 07 '23
Just RHCP? Significantly more expensive than Elton John or others with similar appeal? Or is it maybe everyone from the promoters to Ticketmaster making live music so expensive? What’s the common factor…
5
u/Themirkat Feb 07 '23
This was at marvel yes? Footy capacity with all stands full is like 54,000
2
u/wholeblackpeppercorn Feb 07 '23
It's difficult to estimate because there's no allocated seating behind the stage, but there is also heaps of standing room on the ground
-4
u/Themirkat Feb 07 '23
We are talking packed to the rafters 54,000. Close 1/3 of the stands and increase capacity by 10% seems extraordinary.
2
u/wholeblackpeppercorn Feb 07 '23
They've done 70,000 at sold out concerts before, that's pretty much how many they can get on the ground
3
u/Themirkat Feb 07 '23 edited Feb 07 '23
I've gone googling, 70,000 Jehovah's Witnesses in there once! And 77,327 for Adele in 2017.
Curious to see what the RHCP shows got because tickets were still on sale.
Edit: Viagogo (fuck them) lists 60,000, songkick says 56,347.
18
u/teekayr Feb 07 '23
Was interesting riding the escalator to the train platform that was completely full. When I got to the end, the escalator started smooshing me into people who couldn't move away from the escalator base

u/bitr- Feb 08 '23
there was works being done at Marvel Stadium as well it seems, or some of the exits were closed off. and then once you were outside, a whole lot of area was fenced off in a really weird way and creating massive bottle necks of thousands of drunk people with little direction. i was honestly thinking about those awful stories of crowd crushing it was quite sketchy, but thankfully no incidents or anything as far as i could see or hear!
3
u/teekayr Feb 08 '23
Yeah I noticed that- they'd set up wire fencing in areas that bottlenecked the foot traffic and there wasn't any crowd control there as it was sort of outside the stadium. Coulda gotten dodgy if the crowd was rushing.
11
35
u/akiralx26 Feb 07 '23
Free Sidney Myer classical concert tonight (all Tchaikovsky) which should attract a similar crowd as the weather is good so may be repeated…
8
u/Current_Counter1258 Feb 07 '23
Fantastic. I had no idea this was happening tonight- thank you 🙏🏻 🎼
6
u/akiralx26 Feb 07 '23
No worries, I thought about going but am in Geelong so bit of a trek now. It is streaming as well.
13
u/Themirkat Feb 07 '23
Sidney Myer holds 12,000 so pretty unlikely
62
u/DriveByFader Feb 08 '23
Yeah but these are 12,000 Tchaikovsky fans we're talking about. Things are going to get ugly
8
5
u/Themirkat Feb 08 '23
Things will no doubt get raucous, indeed it might even get a little uncivilized as the drinks flow later in the evening.
2
u/akiralx26 Feb 07 '23
Really, I thought it was more.
3
u/Themirkat Feb 07 '23
For a single stage event it's about that. When they had things like summadayze with multi stages it's a lot more but they use the whole grounds not just the hill
1
u/Wild_Investigator155 Feb 07 '23
Wow, want to go to that but think i have something on. Where do you find out about free gigs like this?
3
u/akiralx26 Feb 08 '23
I go to MSO concerts at Hamer Hall or in Geelong occasionally so I’m on the mailing lists.
2
u/Mimieuxmieux Feb 08 '23
I saw this too but also have something on. I signed up for newsletters from what's on Melbourne 😊

u/zumx DAE weather Feb 07 '23
I had to go to my office this afternoon in Docklands from site and I was stuck in the traffic for well over 50 minutes from Wurundjeri way.
PT Needs to coordinate better with major events like this so people aren't forced to drive.
12
u/sostopher Feb 08 '23 edited Feb 08 '23
People aren't forced to drive. They want to. There's 5 tram lines (2 which run on Flinders St where there were extra services running like they do for the footy) and a major train station near it.
Wurundjeri Way is also a major throughfare which was also dealing with the usual commuter traffic (it'll get worse with the West Gate tunnel).
Should just close to traffic and cars, or plan ahead when it's busy.
2
u/Kremm0 Feb 08 '23
Yeah but also no trains through the loop, and buses replace trains for a lot of the west from North Melbourne onwards, so a lot of the public transport wouldn't have been optimal for people last night

Darth Vader had a better set than the Chillis!!
9
Feb 07 '23
Were they not good? Or ya just memeing.
I really wanted to go, but couldn’t afford tickets.
19
25
u/Sweet__clyde Feb 07 '23
Bit of both.
The stage was amazing. Set list was mixed. Quiet crowd politely waiting for them to finish playing new songs and get to the classics the crowd came to hear.
The band did listen to the feedback from the Sydney concert and substituted in some older stuff.
Good concert. I had fun.
11
u/Nothingnoteworth Feb 07 '23
Quiet crowd politely waiting
Sounds fucking hardcore, I hope you’re okay.
This is why they put those parental advisory explicit content stickers on CDs in the 90s. To try and keep our young mind pure and prevent this kind of violent disorderly chaos.
14
u/Sweet__clyde Feb 07 '23
Lol. Yeah GenX doesn’t rock out the way they used to in the 90’s. Not living up to their reputation
10
u/Fractalize1 Feb 07 '23
Majority of the people in attendance are only there to hear RHCP’s older hits. I can imagine it would be a huge disappointment after paying the huge ticket price.
5
u/smoothymcmellow Feb 08 '23
Can't blame them for promoting their new stuff, as a long time middle aged chili peppers fan I still enjoyed the new songs, just couldn't sing to them.
It was a great set, awesome set-up, post Malone farkin sent it, was an awesome night all around
3
u/Oneinfivehelp Feb 08 '23
Yep ditto. The cross section of ages struck me - 5 year olds to 60. Can’t expect them to play BSSM end to end, they spread it over their catalogue but geez I’d drop a fair bit to go see them play BSSM end to end. And yes - Post Malone absolutely sent it! He’s got a new fan, held the stage solo and almost showed up the headline act
4
u/BiscottiOdd7979 Feb 08 '23
Listened to some of their 2022 albums today and a lot of it is really good with Frusciante back. Black Summer is up there with their classic tunes. Now they are so big a lot of triple m radio listener types must be there (listen to the same 5 bands over and over again and nothing new). Must be frustrating when they have new tunes they want to try out and fans just want to hear the same old 10 tunes every night. It isn’t just a reunion tour. They put out a lot of new music last year.
2
u/spdfghpbot Feb 08 '23
Probably played nothing from One Hot Minute.
Again.
Sucks.
Their best album.
5
u/BadMonkeyBad Feb 07 '23
General consensus for this tour seems to be that the set is too focused on new material. Only two or three well known tracks being played.
23
u/MattC89 Feb 07 '23
Can't comment on other shows, but last night they played Under the bridge, Californication, give it away, snow, can't stop, by the way, suck my kiss... Plenty of the older bigger hits considering this tours on the back of releasing 2 albums last year
-3
u/BadMonkeyBad Feb 07 '23
Cool, Sydney set list was posted and it was vastly different. I wonder if that was planned or they changed due to the socials
7
u/wholeblackpeppercorn Feb 07 '23
I was there last night, that's the most old stuff I've heard any band play.
If people didn't like last night's set, I don't think they really like the chili peppers...
1
u/Azza_ Feb 08 '23
Yeah it was a good variety of old, new, big singles, a few deeper cuts. 40 years of material to fit into a 100 minute setlist, for a band that loves to jam and mix it up. You're not just getting a Greatest Hits album in a live setting from a band like RHCP.
6
u/Careful_Builder_2296 Feb 07 '23
How dare they stay relevant and promote their new music. They should just play the same hits they were playing twenty years ago 🙄
2
1
u/Careful_Builder_2296 Feb 10 '23
Yeah but… this mf wasn’t talking about freaky styley. He was talking about two songs from BSSM/ Cali
1
1
u/BiscottiOdd7979 Feb 08 '23
They aren’t on a reunion tour. Maybe fans are just getting old and crusty.

I work at marvel as part of event planning, Metro is given all the information required when events like this come around, it's up to them if they choose to add services. Guess they didn't feel like it this time.
3
u/11015h4d0wR34lm Feb 08 '23
Glad I do not work in public transport anymore, this photo is giving me ptsd. Love the Chili Willys though, have seen them live 4 times in Sydney, even bought a shirt that did not fit me at one, I was gutted!
18
u/aurum_jrg Feb 07 '23
Just goes to show what a million extra people in Melbourne does to traffic flow. I remember seeing plenty of concerts at Colonial/Telstra/Etihad in the mid 2000’s. Was always surprised how well people got in/out.
With all the development and extra cars it’s just crap now. Even worse with shit PT.
I am wondering whether I want to see RHCP on Thursday now!

You’re right.
All of us (including new migrants) pay gigantic taxes & duties in Vic for all sorts of government programs & spending - give us world class infrastructure first!
…then after that, use taxpayer funds to establish year-long commissions to figure out why the Brown Bilby doesn’t like to eat cabbage.
19
u/redex93 Feb 07 '23
We've only had progressive government for last 8 years so yeah there's alot of catch-up. Don't blame the people with the courage to do it now rather than make it worse for later. Blame the Channel 9 shills mainly Jeff Kennet for privatising the trains in 1990s.
-1
u/tabletennis6 Feb 07 '23
Kennett deservedly should cop a lot of the blame, but so should Labor. Until Dan Andrews, Labor still had more years in power in the last few decades than the Liberals, yet did bugger all!
-5
u/psjfnejs Feb 07 '23
Nope, disagree, I’m blaming every government Labor or Liberal, I don’t discriminize.
13
u/redex93 Feb 07 '23
then you'll be cursed to live in ignorance.
2
u/psjfnejs Feb 07 '23
Absolving a current government because you like them for whatever reason will render the same outcome for you.
4
u/redex93 Feb 08 '23
that's true not saying they're perfect but saying that all government is the same is also like giving up
0
u/psjfnejs Feb 08 '23
Nah - I criticise where criticism is deserved.
Dan’s been in gov how long?
The Liberals at the federal level for how long?
Nobody gets a pass from me, given how heavy our tax burden is.
5
u/sostopher Feb 08 '23 edited Feb 08 '23
Infrastructure takes time to build. It's even easier if you're not selling all the state's assets 30 years ago and approving tonnes of buildings and road that makes it more expensive.
Add on that we seem to refuse to increase density and keep building shit houses ages away from anything with only one road with no transport infrastructure because of NIMBYs and bad council planning.
→ More replies3
u/Themirkat Feb 07 '23
The problem here is partly due to upgrades happening currently, which they would not interrupt for a concert.
6
u/psjfnejs Feb 07 '23
The point the OP above me was making was that more frequent upgrades should have been done in the past, keeping up with the explosive population growth Melbourne has seen over three decades.
1
u/sostopher Feb 08 '23
give us world class infrastructure first!
That's what you're paying for.
0
u/psjfnejs Feb 08 '23
That isn’t keeping up with explosive population growth.
1
u/sostopher Feb 08 '23
Because it's very far behind. People are already getting upset about the cost of the suburban rail loop. Hopefully you're advocating for that be built.

u/bmwiam Feb 07 '23
I’ve been to plenty of footy games with decent crowds at Marvel and I’ve never experienced anything like last night. It was absolute chaos. I’d still go to the concert and be prepared for a walk/scoot to Flinders. Avoid going across the bridge at all costs
14
u/Duckduckdewey Feb 07 '23
Think outside the box and go to the docklands side and take the trams from the waterfront to flinders. People tend to walk towards the general direction of where they want to go (shortest route not necessarily fastest) but didnt realise they can take 1 step back to move 2 steps forward sometimes.
2
2
u/sostopher Feb 08 '23
They even ran extra services like they do for the footy. People just followed the crowd.
0
u/Careful_Builder_2296 Feb 07 '23
Right. I live an hour out of the city, I drove in. Parked a fifteen minute walk from the stadium and had no problems getting home. Plenty of people in RHCP merch were strolling and scooting to other parts of the city that were less congested. 50k people going to an event, if you wanna avoid the spill out after the show…. Just try another route slightly further away.

Don’t they plan for this when booking events? A 10 year old could do a better job. Really no excuse. This is pathetic.

It was still a really great night. It was a great show and the crowd where I was at least was really good.

One must learn to seperate the art from the artist. Otherwise you are banned from listening to about 80% of music.
0
u/aprilalyssa Feb 09 '23
I separate art from the artist to an extent. Rude? hit someone? bit controversial? yea I’ll manage.
I draw the line at supporting and cheering on a dude who, again, admitted to statutory raping a 14 yr old girl. That shit makes me physically nauseous. So yea, chilli peppers and Elvis are out. Each to their own ig but I’m judging them all hard.

I have always thought that they should build a pedestrian viaduct over where the tracks are beside platform 16 to connect to the overpass at the Flinders St end of Southern Cross station. There is always a bottleneck coming back from the footy on approach to Southern Cross as people funnel through the Myki gates. It would be better if the crowd got shared between the two overpasses.
1
u/Phascolar Feb 08 '23
And what's in place to deter a crowd crush? More planning needs to be implemented.
1
u/QuickBobcat 🍓 🍓 Feb 08 '23
Wow me and the husband were pretty lucky we managed to catch our train from southern cross. The crowd was really starting to build up so I have no idea how we managed to dodge the massive build up despite us having to leave from GA.

I believe the entire loop is closed. Your best bet is to walk down the stairs on the docklands side then either walk, tram or scooter up Collins towards Flinders

same picture for many other major events in Melbourne. PTV gets the information months in advance and always reacts the same “we are going to be prepared” and they are never prepared especially for anyone going to the west!
