Megathread Megathread: The US House of Representatives Selects Kevin McCarthy as Speaker
On the 4th day of voting, the US House of Representatives selected Kevin McCarthy, the Republican from California's 20th District and the House minority leader from 2019 to to 2022, as its Speaker. The 15th and deciding vote broke down largely along partisan lines. All 212 Democrats voted for Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York's 8th District, as they had every previous round with the exception of the 12th, when Rep. Trone (Maryland-6) was out for a previously-scheduled surgery.
The House will proceed later with a vote on a rules package that was the subject of intense negotiations between Kevin McCarthy and the twenty-or-so Freedom Caucus members who had stymied McCarthy's bid for office. According to this recommended AP article published just before the 15th ballot, this would give even one House member the power to effectively force a new Speaker vote. Additionally:
Other wins for the holdouts are more obscure and include provisions in the proposed deal to expand the number of seats available on the House Rules Committee, to mandate 72 hours for bills to be posted before votes and to promise to try for a constitutional amendment that would impose federal limits on the number of terms a person could serve in the House and Senate.

Megathread Megathread: FBI Searches Former President Donald Trump's Florida Home
Former President Donald J. Trump said on Monday that the F.B.I. had searched his Palm Beach, Fla., home and had broken open a safe — an account that, if accurate, would be a dramatic escalation in the various investigations into the former president. The search, according to two people familiar with the investigation, appeared to be focused on material that Mr. Trump had brought with him to Mar-a-Lago, his private club and residence, after he left the White House. Those boxes contained many pages of classified documents, according to a person familiar with their contents. The discovery of classified information at Mar-a-Lago was referred to the Justice Department by the National Archives and Records Administration, which said it had found classified material in 15 boxes at the residence.

The Supreme Court has officially released its ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, on the constitutionality of pre-viability abortion bans. Casey, and returning "the authority to regulate abortion" to the states.
Justice Alito delivered the majority opinion, joined by Justices Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett. Justices Thomas, Kavanaugh, and Chief Justice Roberts each filed concurring opinions, while Justices Breyer, Sotomayor and Kagan dissented.

Megathread Megathread: Supreme Court Strikes New York Gun Law, Expanding Gun Rights
The Supreme Court said Thursday that Americans have a right to carry guns in public, a major expansion of gun rights.
The justices’ 6-3 decision follows a series of recent mass shootings and is expected to ultimately allow more people to legally carry guns on the streets of the nation’s largest cities — including New York, Los Angeles and Boston — and elsewhere. About a quarter of the U.S. population lives in states expected to be affected by the ruling, the high court’s first major gun decision in more than a decade.

Megathread Megathread: President Biden Nominates Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court
In response to Justice Breyer's retirement, President Biden has nominated US Court of Appeals Circuit Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for a seat on the Supreme Court of the United States.
After graduating from Harvard University, Jackson clerked for Justice Breyer and served as vice chair of the U.S. Sentencing Commission. She was nominated for district court judgeship by President Obama and was considered as a potential replacement for Justice Scalia. She was elevated to the US Court of Appeals in March of 2021 after receiving confirmation votes from a bipartisan collection of Senators, including Lindsay Graham, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski.
Following the nomination, Jackson will face the Senate Judiciary Committee and undergo vetting and questioning by the 20-person team. The committee will then vote on whether or not to advance her to the Full Senate for a final approval vote. If seated, she will have a lifetime appointment and become the first Black woman to serve on the court, as has been pledged by Biden throughout his campaign and presidency.

Megathread Megathread: Supreme Court halts vaccine mandate for large businesses, leaves mandate for healthcare workers in place
The Supreme Court has blocked a key plank of the Biden administration's pandemic response effort, by halting enforcement of the OSHA vaccine mandate. In a 6-3 ruling, the Court judged that requiring employees at large businesses to be vaccinated against COVID, or undergo weekly testing and wear a mask, exceeded the authority granted by Congress. All three liberal justices dissented.
At the same time, in a second unsigned opinion, Court has allowed the administration to continue enforcement of a vaccinate mandate for healthcare workers at facilities that receive Medicaid or Medicare funding. This measure is expected to affect 10 million workers and takes effect this month. Conservative justices Thomas, Aliton, Gorsuch, and Barrett dissented, while Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Kavanaugh sided with their liberal collogues.

Megathread Megathread: Supreme Court rejects Trump’s request to block release of documents to Jan. 6 Committee
This evening, the US Supreme Court rejected an appeal by former President Donald Trump seeking to enjoin the Congressional January 6th commission from reviewing communications made by the former President while in office in the lead up to the January 6, 2021 riot at the Capitol. Former President Trump had sought to assert executive privilege over these communications to shield them from review by the commission, but the court of appeals denied this request. The decision split 8-1, with only Justice Clarence Thomas indicating that he would have granted the application for a stay.
